This shortlist contains two products, not an artificial ranking of everything labelled “AI SEO.” Surfer suits teams looking for a detailed, human-controlled editing workflow; Frase extends further into CMS publishing and decay monitoring. The available source-led evidence is enough to choose a trial, not enough to name a universal winner.

Surfer SEO — dedicated optimisation workflow

Surfer has expanded from a content-scoring editor into a broader content and AI-visibility platform. Discovery is the $49 entry point for teams focused on content production; prompt tracking begins on Standard, while daily supported-model tracking begins on Pro at a considerably higher price. We have not independently measured its usability, output quality or AI-visibility accuracy.

Frase — broader content operating workflow

Frase presents a broader loop spanning research, drafting, SEO/GEO scoring, CMS publishing and monitoring. Content Guard watches for ranking or traffic decay and prepares a revision, with approval as the default. Its advertised annual entry price is lower, but Starter’s 10-article allowance and the products’ different scopes make price alone a poor comparison.

How we selected these tools

This shortlist considers official product documentation, current vendor pricing, intended workflows and available support information. It does not score hands-on ease of use or output quality. See our editorial method. Inclusion is selective and should not be interpreted as coverage of every product in the market.

Which AI SEO tool should you choose?

Trial Surfer SEO when a detailed Content Editor and human-controlled publication are the main requirements. Trial Frase when the team wants research, CMS publishing and decay monitoring in one service. Give both the same brief, sources and approval standard, then compare the time and cost required to reach an approved article. Our Surfer vs Frase comparison lists the documented differences.

Choose from the bottleneck, not the feature count

Start with the part of production that currently consumes paid human time. A tool that solves a problem you do not have adds another dashboard without improving the article.

Current bottleneck Capability to test Evidence to collect
Briefs take too long SERP research and outline controls Research minutes saved; irrelevant headings removed
Drafts miss search intent Content guidance during revision Material recommendations accepted versus rejected
Editors chase a score Explanation and control of recommendations Cases where clarity and score conflict
Published pages decay unnoticed Monitoring and alert quality Useful alerts divided by all alerts reviewed
CMS hand-offs create errors Publishing integration and rollback Formatting defects; time to restore the prior version
AI-search reporting is unclear Prompt coverage and refresh cadence Decisions changed because of the data

If no row describes a costly problem, delay the subscription. “We should use AI for SEO” is not a purchasing requirement.

Use one canonical matched trial

Do not invent a different test for every shortlist entry. Our Surfer vs Frase comparison contains the canonical three-job trial and 90-day cost model. Use it unchanged for both products, including the current workflow as the baseline. The individual reviews then explain the product-specific checks: Content Editor and visibility decisions for Surfer; CMS permissions, staging and rollback for Frase.

What this shortlist does not establish

Vendor documentation can establish available controls, advertised limits and intended workflows. It cannot establish ease of use, output accuracy, ranking impact or support quality in your account. BenPicks has not completed the matched trial and therefore does not award a performance winner. The shortlist is a defensible way to decide what to test next.
